Down on the Drapes…

A number of people with varying degrees of sensitivity to the spirit world have stayed at the Artist House in hopes of communicating with the spirits. Most leave with little more than a relaxing stay, but several have claimed communication with different spirits at the inn.

Nancy Tazwell purchased the home from the Reuters in 1980 and felt that the energies were centered in the turret.

“It’s my understanding that this was where the doll was kept. The cupola was Gene Otto’s place in the house when he was a child and later on when it was his studio. When I would walk up the steps there would sometimes be like a cold wind, and the windows would shake as though there were a storm going on. I didn’t find it frightening. I would say things like ‘Don’t worry, I am a friendly spirit.’ I wish now I had been more aware. It seems that I was always so busy rushing around that I didn’t take very much time to experience the sensations of the house.”

A German couple stayed in the Turret Suite, and although the husband felt nothing, his wife claimed she felt a presence that grew stronger with every step up the room’s staircase.

Perhaps the strangest report came in 1998 from a woman who claimed no psychic ability. She approached the front desk and told the manager, “She doesn’t like the new drapes.”

What makes the last story curious is the fact that the drapes had recently been changed. Interviews with those familiar with the Otto home during Gene and Anne’s residence often cite the beautiful green and yellow drapes that adorned their windows.
